The soup that saved me from diarrhea and vomiting

It was a Friday night and i decided to make some pinto beans in a small crock pot for dinner. I planned to combine it with some rice and chicken. After waiting for sometime, the beans were ready, or so i thought. I tasted them, because why not, before i put them on the plate.

I kept on tasting them and they seemed fine. Then, 10 minutes later, i felt that knot in my stomach. Great.

Thinking it is probably nothing, i just moved on and kept trying to arrange my meal. About 10 minutes later i ran to the bathroom throwing up.

What follows was the constant struggle with diarrhea and vomit. The beans were undercooked.

After trying several ways of healing and no progress, I called my mother and she mentioned the Haitian bread soup which i did not think about.

As a Haitian, i should have known that. How embarrassing.

What is Haitian Bread Soup?

Haitian bread soup also known as “soup pen” is a liquid dish made of bread. It helps your stomach heal after losing a lot of liquid from diarrhea or vomit.

How to make it (recipe may vary) :

  • Put white bread (you can use wheat) in water until it becomes soggy. Leave it there in a large amount of water.

  • Fry some leak in oil in a pan and once colored fill the pan with water. Sometimes you don’t fry anything initially, and just boil the water first.

  • Once you have the water ready and boiling (with or without the leak), put the soggy bread and smash it with a spoon.

  • Wait until everything is boiled and the bread melted in the water

  • Add some salt

This soup gave me relief after suffering for hours and it is simple to make. You do need to make sure you have let everything out before consuming the soup.

I later realized that I could have died that day because if i ate more of these beans uncooked they would have killed me.

I do not particularly enjoy Haitian bread soup, but that did not matter since it is great to treat an upset stomach. Therefore, i definitely recommend it.

Also, make sure you have cooked beans, especially pinto ones.
